We Will Not Let Hate Win (A Pastoral Letter After Orlando)

From Amy Yoder McGloughlin and John Bergen.

Last night we saw many of you at the City Hall vigil, along with many thousand other Philadelphians, who were grieving the massacre of 50 queer folks at the Pulse Night Club in Orlando.

Today, we gathered with religious leaders of faith in Philadelphia, along with Rev. Dr. William Barber II (of Moral Mondays), who reminded us that, "Hate cannot have the first, last and loudest word."

We will not let hate win.

Friends, in case you need reminding, you are loved, you are beautiful, and you are created in the image and likeness of God.

If you need to be reminded of that face to face, we are here for you.

This church is here for you. And, because you are a beautiful reflection of the creator, be a reminder of God's love to others, especially our queer and Muslim friends.  Let us dance defiantly in the face of fear and violence.  Grab a dancing partner and spread that message of love to others.  There is no fear in love, because perfect love casts out fear.  (I John 4:18)

We'll be checking in on you throughout the week.  Please check in on your friends and neighbors who have felt the tragedy very personally.

We love you all.
