A Justice Issue
    a Moral Imperative

Get informed and do something!
We at Germantown Mennonite Church believe universal healthcare is an expression of what the Bible teaches--caring for the least of the least--and of our deeply-held American values of sharing and compassion.
We invite other faith communities to join us in an informed discussion and active pursuit calling on our elected officials to do the right thing.

GMC Held Healthcare Reform Neighborhood Forum

On Sunday, Oct 18, 2009, Wendell Potter, former PR chief for CIGNA, shared with the GMC community and our neighbors his perspective on the need for universal healthcare and why he left CIGNA and became an advocate for reform. He was deeply moved when he visited a Remote Area Medical clinic in rural Virginia. There he saw people standing for hours in long lines in the rain to get free medical care, even people with insurance but who couldn't afford the out-of-pocket costs.

Potter knew then and there he was on the wrong side of the heathcare reform debate.

Our pastor Kipp Gilmore-Clough welcomed people and led in the Invocation. Our own Niku Thomas, an Einstein Medical Center cardiologist, shared her perspective--a provider's perspective--on the need for healthcare reform and introduced Wendell Potter.

Niku used the comical story about how her mother bought her sister a pair of size-8 1/2 shoes, when all evidence pointed to the need for at least a size-9, to reflect on whether the reforms being proposed in Congress would be the "right size."

Jenny Anne Horst-Martz led the question-and-answer session. Many people from the neighborhood asked questions ranging from reform's impact on small businesses, to single payer vs. public option, expanded Medicaid eligibility, and how to raise awareness among young people regarding the need for change.

Patricia Beynen asked people to respond to the question, "what can one person do about this issue?" Janet Boys and Jeff Gingerich recorded the suggestions. Read more here and also on "What Have You Done?"
Grace Marie Gerber provided piano music before the event formally opened.

Rev. Raymond Jackson led in a Benediction that wonderfully expressed our belief in healthcare for all.

Thanks to the planning group: Patricia Beynen, Janet Boys, Ken Handrich, Lois Ann Handrich, Jenny Anne Horst-Martz, and Ming Shem Lu.

"
We need to think of the coming weeks as some of the most important weeks in the history of this country. We must redouble our efforts to make sure members of Congress put our interests above those of private health insurers and others who view reform as a way to make more money."
  - Wendell Potter
